Note: ผีซ้ำด้ำพลอย means to have [at least two] misfortunes one after the other/back-to-back --> ถูกซ้ำเติมเมื่อพลาดพลั้งลง หรือเมื่อคราวเคราะห์ร้าย. Many people tend to get confused and say or write the word ด้ำ as ด้าม, which is incorrect. ด้ำ here means a household or guardian spirit, not ด้าม a handle, hilt, holder, shaft or anything. So it's like the evil has just given you bad luck, and you take a turn for the worst when your own household/guardian spirit (who is supposed to be kind to you and protect you from all harm) follows up with another blow --> ผีทำให้ซวยยังไม่พอ ซ้ำร้าย...ด้ำก็มาพลอยป่วนให้แย่ลงไปอีก.

ผีเสื้อราตรี = Lady of the night.

เหมือนกันราวกับแกะ = doppelgänger (a spirit that looks exactly like a living person, or a person who looks exactly like someone else but who is not related to them [Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary]).

Note: This figurative idiom can also be compared to--but doesn't exactly mean--like two peas in a pod, which mean very similar, especially in appearance, which is synonymous with dead ringer. Many Thais have misinterpreted เหมือนกันราวกับแกะ by literally translating it as as similar as two sheep, because when แกะ is heard or mentioned, the word sheep comes first to most people's minds (ah...semantics!), and also because all sheep look alike.  Yet, แกะ here is an intransitive verb meaning to carve in, to chisel out, to take out, to engrave. The etymology of this idiom was derived from the act of casting statues--mostly Buddha images--in the old Siam's time. The sculptors used a single mould to produce several Buddha images. Two images are, therefore, exactly identical in every detail (doppelgänger). Hence, the comparison. The full form of this old adage is: "เหมือนกันราวกับแกะออกมาจากแม่พิมพ์เดียวกัน" (to look exactly identical as if the two were cast using the same mould).

เหยียบเรือสองแคม = To run with the hare and hunt with the hounds.

องุ่นเปรี้ยว มะนาวหวาน = The grapes are sour.

อดเปรี้ยวไว้กินหวาน = He that eats the hard shall eat the ripe. (Forego the sour for the sweet.)

อย่าจับปลาสองมือ = You cannot eat your cake and have your cake (it). You can't have your cake and eat it, too. You can't do both.

อย่าชิงสุกก่อนห่าม = Early ripe, early rotten.

อย่าตีตนไปก่อนไข้ = Cross the bridge when you come to it.

อย่าผัดวันประกันพรุ่ง = Never put off till tomorrow what can be done today. (Don't put off today by pledging tomorrow.)

อย่าฟื้นฝอยหาตะเข็บ = Don't turn over the rubbish to look for a centipede. Don't feed a silkworm that's sleeping. Let sleeping dogs lie.

Note: ตะเข็บ คือ สัตว์พวกเดียวกับตะขาบ แต่เรียกแยกโดยถือเอาพวกที่มีขนาดเล็ก เช่น ยาวต่ำกว่า ๕ - ๖ เซนติเมตร ลงไป ลำตัวเล็ก มีปล้องจำนวน ๓๑ - ๑๗๓ ปล้อง แต่ละปล้องมีขา ๑ คู่ และขายาวกว่าปล้องลำตัวมาก ที่แพร่หลาย เช่น สกุล Geophilus ในวงศ์ Geophilidae. จะเข็บ หรือ ขี้เข็บ ก็เรียก.

อย่าหาเหาใส่หัว (ไม่มีเหา หาเหาใส่หัว. ไม่มีเรื่องหาเรื่องใส่ตัว) = Don't look for fleas on others to get them on your own head. Mind your own business.

อย่าเห็นขี้ดีกว่าไส้ = Blood is thicker than water. The neighbor's lawn is always greener. The grass is always greener on the other side (of the fence). These are used when you think other people always seem to be in a better situation than you, although they may not be.

EG: I sometimes think I'd be happier teaching in Spain. Oh well, the grass is always greener on the other side!

เอากุ้งฝอยไปตกปลากะพง = To throw out a sprat to catch a mackerel. Venture a small fish to catch a great one.

เอามะพร้าวห้าวไปขายสวน (also: เอามะพร้าวห้าวไปขายสวน เอาแป้งนวลไปขายชาววัง) = To carry/take/bring coals to Newcastle.

เอาลูกเขามาเลี้ยง เอาเมี่ยงเขามาอม = Put another man's child in your bosom, and he'll creep out at your elbow.

เอาหูไปนา เอาตาไปไร่ = To turn a blind eye. To turn a deaf ear.

"แมลง" คือ สัตว์ไม่มีกระดูกสันหลัง ที่เมื่อร่างกายเจริญเติบโตเต็มที่แล้ว แบ่งออกเป็นสามส่วน เห็นได้ชัดเจน ได้แก่ ส่วนหัว ส่วนอก ("thorax": the middle of the three chief divisions of the body of an insect) และส่วนท้อง. แมลงมีหกขา เป็นสัตว์ไม่มีกระดูกสันหลังพวกเดียวที่มีปีก ซึ่งอาจจะมีหนึ่งหรือสองคู่ แต่อาจจะพบพวกที่ไม่มีปีกก็ได้ เป็นสัตว์ที่มีมากชนิดที่สุดในโลก มักจะเรียกสับกับคำว่า แมง.

เคล็ดการจำเพื่อป้องกันความผิดพลาดสับสนก็คือ ให้จำว่า "แมง" มีสองส่วน "แมลง" มีสาม. หากพินิจจ้องมองดูแล้ว แลเห็นเพียงสองส่วน คือ ส่วนหัวกับส่วนท้อง ให้เรียกแค่ "แมง"...ไม่มี "ล" แต่ถ้ามีส่วนอก (thorax) เพิ่มเข้ามา เราก็เพิ่ม "ล" เข้าไป...กลายเป็น "แมลง."

แมวไม่อยู่ หนูร่าเริง/ระเริง. แมวมา หลังคาเปิง. = When the cat is away, the mice will play.

ไม่ได้ด้วยเล่ห์ก็เอาด้วยล ไม่ได้ด้วยมนต์ก็เอาด้วยคาถา = By hook or by crook. (Cf.: Machiavelli's The Prince, which is the origin of the term "Machiavellianism")
